Tips For A Successful Move

The excitement of moving into your new home can quickly diminish if you're not prepared well for the move. The key to a successful move is to start early, plan ahead, and be organized.

Packing

  • Use sturdy boxes
  • You can usually get nice, free boxes from the local liquor or grocery store
  • Use your sheets and towels to pack items that are fragile or need extra padding
  • When packing plates, stack them vertically for less chance of breakage
  • Be sure to label your boxes

It's a great idea to pack one box with the essentials that you'll need on the first night in your new home: sheets, a few towels, toiletries, a change of clothes for everyone in the house, etc. Put this box in your car with you instead of the moving truck. You'll be able to easily find it and will have everything you need until you get some of your other belongings unpacked.

The Moving Company

  • Work closely with your mover
  • Give them your cell phone number and email address so they can get in contact with you easily
  • Ask questions about anything you don't understand or are unsure of
  • Read the inventory form carefully
  • Discuss what is covered and how much you'll pay before moving day to avoid any surprises at the time your belongings are delivered

Other Good Ideas

  • You can teach your children their new address by letting them write it on all your moving boxes
  • Don't move so much stuff - have a yard sale a few weeks before your move!
  • Pack your phone book and keep it handy in case you need to call old neighbors or businesses
  • When you reach your new home, let all of your electrical appliances reach room temperature before plugging them in.
